Healthy Choices

  Russian:

  • Cabbage rolls (ask about the type of meat used)
  • Braised cabbage
  • Svejie Ovoshy (fresh vegetable salad, usually marinated in vinegar or oil, ask)
  • Sauerkraut
  • Blini (little pancakes topped with a little sour cream)
  • Potato Latkes (potato pancakes
  • Kroshka-Kartoshka (baked potato!)
  • Boiled kasha (buckwheat) or rice
  • Vegetable Okroshka (cold soup)
  • Ukha (fish soup)
  • Noodle soup
  • Kuryniy (chicken soup)
  • Grybnoy (mushroom soup)
  • Rassolruk (beef and veggie soup)
  • Beef tenderloin
  • Shashlik (leg of lamb skewers)

  Polish:

  • Barszcz (beetroot soup)
  • Roasted Pork with Caraway
  • Golabki (cabbage stuffed with rice and mushroom)
  • Krupnik (barley soup)
  • Fasola (string bean soup)

Tips

  • It helps to ask about preparation as traditional Russian and Polish foods are made with generous amounts of butter or oil.
  • Sour cream and mayonnaise are common condiments.  Choose salads made without them and skip adding the sour cream.
  • Sauerkraut is high in sodium, eat in moderation.
