Right now people all over the country are in crisis. They are scared and overwhelmed. Then they are told, "stay positive" and "keep your head up." That's really not helpful when you are depressed and freaking out.
This type of stress, anxiety and sense of being overwhelmed can tempt many of us to abandon exercise and eat comfort food.
What we need right now, more than ever, is to eat healthy and move our bodies. We need the strength to get through these challenging times.
So, what I'd like to do is give you some assignments that actually WILL make the difference. But you must do them. Actions mean nothing unless you act on them. So do these... immediately!
There are three things that you can do, RIGHT NOW that will lead you to solutions and answers.
1. Do Something Physical
I mean it. Anything. Even if you don't normally exercise, you MUST do something physical. Do some gardening, play some basketball, turn on the music and dance until you are exhausted, go for a run, do a strenuous workout or a power walk.
Take this seriously. When you do something physical, you instantly feel stronger and more capable. You feel like you can accomplish more. You feel powerful. When you feel powerful, your thinking becomes more open, clear and creative. That is the feeling you need during a crisis â€" to FEEL like you can get through it!
You won't get that feeling by sitting in a fear or panic state. Being physical will almost instantaneously shift your outlook on life, stimulate your creativity and create a resourceful attitude and state of mind. That new outlook holds the answers to your existing challenges.
2. Change Your Environment
An environmental shift will stimulate your creativity and broaden your perspective. While in a panic state, often we can only see what's right in front of us â€" the challenge. We don't see all the answers and possibilities because our view has become narrow.
When you change your environment, you broaden your view allowing new information to enter and stimulating your creativity. This is where new ideas and solutions emerge. So, get out of the house, the office, even just a room you are used to sitting in. Drive to family or friends for the weekend, go to the beach, go to the coffeehouse down the street -- change your environment.
3. Use Your Resources
This includes people! You will need people at this time. You need your family, friends, and coaches -- utilize them all. Share your scenario with others and ask them for advice, support and help.
If you don't have family, get help through support from others. There are tons of resources and people out there to support you including non-profit opportunities. Utilize books, magazines, whatever you can get your hands on that will stimulate your mind and create a resourceful, empowered state. Books, television programs and movies on those who have overcome serious challenges are an excellent resource to shift your state of mind from panic to power.
