Some of the foods and beverages that you consume every day could be doing a tremendous amount of damage to your teeth and gums. An unhealthy diet will increase your risk of many different oral health complications ranging from tooth decay to periodontal disease. Here is a look at a handful of foods that might be ruining your oral health.


Plain White Bread



Even though plain white bread is a staple food in many households, it is terrible for your oral health. In addition to being full of refined carbohydrates and empty calories, it is also packed with sugar. When sugar clings to your teeth, it will eventually turn into plaque. Plaque is the sticky film that causes tooth decay, gum disease, and many other oral health problems. Bread should always be eaten in moderation, and it is a good idea to finish off every meal with a large glass of water to clean your mouth.


Citrus Fruits



It is an unfortunate fact that citrus fruits are bad for your teeth and gums as well. Those fruits are usually packed with a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, but they also contain citric acid. That type of acid eats away at the enamel on your teeth. Once your enamel has been completely stripped away, you will need to explore your options for restorative dental care. That might include dental crowns, sealants, or veneers.


Hard Candy



Hard candy is another type of food that must be eaten in moderation. While the occasional sweet treat won’t be a problem, eating hard candy too often could severely damage your teeth and gums. All of the sugar is going to cling to your teeth and feed the unhealthy bacteria in your mouth. When you bite down on the candy, you could damage your enamel or chip a tooth. Those who have a sweet tooth should stick to the occasional piece of chocolate or bowl of ice cream.


Dried Fruit



Many people believe that dried fruit is a healthy snack, but most of those products are full of sugar. Sticky foods will also cling to your teeth and gums for long periods of time, and that is going to increase your risk of cavities and gum disease. Whenever you eat any sticky foods, you should brush your teeth or drink a large glass of water afterward.


In order to keep your teeth and gums healthy, you need to adhere to a nutritious diet. You must also schedule regular dental appointments so that a dentist can remove any lingering plaque or tartar.
