This Soup’s for the Birds!
Menu writers sometimes get clever and brand dishes with a wacky name that only sounds gross. Take “bird's nest soup” for instance… Oops, scratch that. Bird’s nest soup is really made from bird nests!
In fact, it’s even worse than it sounds. This Chinese delicacy is made from cave swift saliva. The birds form their nests by spitting on the walls of caves. When dissolved in water, the bird nests have a gelatinous texture that’s supposedly good for soup.
Don’t laugh it off as simply a crazy thing from another culture. Americans are one of the major importers of these nests.
And it costs a real nest egg to buy a bowl of bird’s nest soup â€" up to $100!
It’s the spittin’ image of insanity if you ask me!
