Are you counting down the days until you can dive into your Easter basket? I understand. I'm a huge Peep fan. But I also know that the calories from chocolate and sugary sweets aren't really worth it when you realize what it takes to burn them off. For example, it would take me 25 minutes of running to burn off the calories in a single serving of Peeps. I guess that doesn't seem too bad, as long as I skip the calories in Cadbury Creme Eggs and the extra calories and fat in a chocolate bunny.

I don't have three hours to run. So I'm going to enjoy my Peeps and au gratin potatoes in moderation. These are a few portion control tips I've picked up through the years to help keep my calorie count in check.

Easy Portion Control Tips

  • Don't let your food touch. Believe it or not, this trick really works. If you go to a buffet, fill your plate once but don't let any of the food items touch each other. You'll be surprised how it can limit the amount of food you take!

  • Walk before you eat. Grab your friends and family and head outdoors for a healthy hike before you indulge in anything. You'll burn extra calories and be less likely to overindulge.

  • Eat veggies first. Make spring vegetables the focus of your meal. Of course, choose a few sweet treats, but fill up on fiber-rich healthy items first.

Have a peaceful holiday!
