New Year, New You: 3 Superfoods To Help You Reach Those Resolutions
By Emma Sturgis

While the term “superfood” was originally used as a buzzword, it has actually become popular among health enthusiasts and the medical community in the last few years. A superfood is essentially any food product that provides us with a wide variety of health benefits and little or no drawbacks. If you would like to be as healthy as possible in the coming year, then here is a look at three amazing superfoods you might want to include in your diet.

1. Avocados
Many people throughout the world think of fat as a bad thing, but this macronutrient is actually vital to our health. Healthy fat gives us long-lasting energy and enables our cells to repair themselves. Avocados are packed with healthy fat as well as 20 other essential vitamins and minerals such as potassium, fiber, and vitamin E. This creamy green fruit is exceptionally easy to cook with, and it makes an excellent addition to soups, salads, shakes, and ice cream. It can also be eaten by itself with nothing more than a sprinkle of sea salt and black pepper.

2. Matcha Green Tea

Matcha green tea, like the products found at Sunfood , is made from nutrient-rich young tea leaves that have been ground by stone to a very fine powder. Green tea has been used as a medicinal supplement for thousands of years to treat everything from gastrointestinal discomfort to general lethargy. It is filled with antioxidants, L-Theanine, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C, and protein. Many people make hot tea with their matcha green tea powder, but it can also be added to other popular drinks and dishes including yogurt, pancakes, pudding, and protein shakes.

3. Raw Almonds
In order to slightly alter their taste, many companies now toast or bake their almonds before packaging them. Unfortunately, the act of heating an almond destroys many of its key nutrients. A raw organic almond is an excellent snack that can be eaten at any time of the day. A single handful of almonds contains a high dose of protein, magnesium, iron, fiber, and potassium. Many doctors now tell their elderly patients to eat almonds every week to reduce their risk of brain inflammation. This type of inflammation has been tied to multiple dementia-related disorders including Alzheimer's.

In addition to these three superfoods, your diet should also consist of fresh vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. A healthy diet that is packed with superfoods will help you avoid a variety of common illnesses and medical conditions including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and more.
