I was asked to give my opinion on V8 and V8 splash. I feel that I should start this blog by saying that I am not in general a proponent of getting your fruits and veggies in liquid form when you could have them whole. :)
all for getting your fruits and veggies in any way you can. One seemingly easy way might be to grab a V8 or V8 Splash. While this may not be the worst idea out there, there is usually a price to pay for such convenience.
Let's start with V8 Splash. They advertise that you can get a serving of fruit as well as antioxidants and vitamins in an 8-ounce glass, and while this may be true, here is what V8 Splash is made of: carrot juice, fruit juice and fruity flavors. What exactly are "fruity flavors" anyway? Also, an 8-ounce glass of V-8 splash is 70 calories and has 18 grams of sugar, and the first two ingredients are: water and high fructose corn syrup.
While this juice drink does provide Vitamins A, C and E, it also provides additional sugars that you wouldn't be getting from eating a fruit or vegetable. Juice also leaves out that other valuable thing from whole fruits: the fiber! The fiber helps with weight loss and has other beneficial properties. You can drink the diet version of V8 Splash for only 10 calories, however, the reason for this is it's sweetened with sucralose.
While V8 is not a terrible drink (especially compared to other juice options out there) and it is
rich in antioxidants, it also comes with a cost. The original version of V8 is very high in sodium. An 8-ounce glass of regular V8 has 420 mg of sodium per serving! The good news is that they do make a low sodium option, which is a choice that I would endorse. An 8-ounce glass of low sodium V8 only has 70 mg sodium. V8 is also low in calories and does have 2 grams of fiber per serving. So in general, this is one of the better juice options out there.
While my intent is not to bash any food or drink, and I always say anything is okay in moderation, I do feel pretty strongly about getting your fruits and veggies in their natural forms. If you're concerned that you're not getting enough fruits and veggies in your diet, try setting a goal to include one or the other at each meal.
