Did you know that March is also known as National Nutrition Month? It’s a month in which there is a greater focus on healthy eating. The focus of this year’s nutrition month is “Get Your Plate in Shape.” The point of this year’s theme is to draw attention to the USDA’s new food guide called “My Plate.” The plate, in my opinion, is a much better way to depict how we should all be eating. It shows how the food groups should fit into each meal, putting an emphasis on getting variety at all meals, not just meeting serving suggestions. I encourage you to check out the new website. Go to www.choosemyplate.gov and find out more about the new food guide, and check out all the tips and information they have on there.
As a tribute to the theme and National Nutrition month, I’m going to blog about a different feature of the new My Plate each week in the month of March to give you tips on how to achieve better balance in your diet. Look for ways to increase your fruit and vegetable intake later this week and I’ll cover other topics including choosing lean and varied proteins, making half your grains whole and increasing calcium rich foods in your diet in the weeks to follow.
