Accountability is one of the most important tips for losing weight that you can adopt. Accountability can be accomplished in a number of ways. You can hold yourself accountable for losing weight, but many of us find it too easy to rationalize our choices, and that makes it very difficult to be self-accountable.

Using a food diary is one idea that revolves around dieting accountability. While keeping a food diary is one of the most effective tips for losing weight, many of us find it tedious to write everything we eat and drink into a booklet. That’s why finding an accountability partner can be one of the better ideas.

Accountability partners can be found in any number of ways. Chances are that you probably already have one or more friends that need or want to lose weight. Simply ask them if they want to become your accountability partner or form an accountability group. Set up a weekly schedule to meet in person, by phone, or by email. Keeping it light and fun can make having an accountability partner one of the most enjoyable ways to lose weight.

One way to keep it fun is to have a friendly diet competition with your accountability partner. Challenge your partner to see who can lose the most weight in a set period of time (in a healthy way, of course!). A weekly weigh-in with your diet accountability partner by phone or email keeps the competition going and keeps you both accountable to maximize results. The odds are that you will both lose more weight than if you weren't competing!

If you don't have any friends that want to lose weight, don't let that get in the way of getting an accountability partner. In today's social networking environment, a number of good Internet weight loss communities are available (like the one here at Diet.com). While you might be a little skeptical of the effectiveness of an Internet weight loss community, research studies have shown that using these communities can be one of the effective tips for losing weight. In fact, one research study [free to download] reported that members of weight loss communities use forums frequently to provide and obtain weight loss support[1]. The members were able to receive and provide encouragement, share tips for losing weight, and share their experiences. While many Internet weight loss communities charge for membership, not all of them do.
