Maybe you're trying to lose weight, or maybe you just want to live a healthier, more natural lifestyle, but sugar seems to always get in the way. Sugar provides short-term pleasure at a long-term cost, so it's worth the effort of giving it up. Here are just five tips for cutting sugar out of your life for good!

1. Eat More Protein


Increasing the amount of protein in your diet can help you curb your sugar cravings. Not only will it boost your energy levels in an all-natural way, but it will also make you feel fuller and less likely to reach for the candy jar between meals. If you want to break sugar's hold over you, start cooking more eggs, beans and chicken breasts.

2. Flavor Your Food


There are many ways to add sweetness to your plate without breaking open the sugar packets. For example, a dash of vanilla extract will give your stir fry a sweet, syrupy taste, and cinnamon can be sprinkled on your oatmeal for a nice kick. You might even experiment with bold flavors like lemon and lime if you want to taste every bite of your food.



3. Replace Your Sugary Additives


From coffee creamers to flavored water packets, sugar is lurking inside many drink additives. The good news is that you can switch to sugar-free or diet products such as Monin for the same great taste without the health risks. You don't have to give up your favorite drink; you just have to tweak the ingredients that are going inside it.

4. Stay Hydrated


Your body can sometimes confuse the signals for hunger and thirst, so if you find yourself always rooting through the fridge and indulging in sugary things that you know you shouldn't, make an effort to drink more water. This is also a great way to beat cravings: Drink a full glass of water, wait 20 minutes and take stock of your appetite. You probably won't even want that doughnut anymore.

5. Know Thyself


Why do you reach for sugary snacks? Is it a treat after a long day, or do you use it as an alternative to caffeine when you need a quick burst of energy? Once you've figured out the reasons behind your cravings, you can replace sugar with other mood-boosting and self-rewarding behaviors. For example, you might go for a jog to get a rush of endorphins instead.

Sugar is merely empty calories. It has no vitamins or minerals and is simply not worth taking, especially if you find yourself binging on it. These are just a few ways to kick your sugar habit. If you're serious about fitting into those old jeans again, start by dumping all of your sugar down the drain!
