Whenever fall comes around, we start seeing pumpkins everywhere and begin to consume familiar treats such as pumpkin pie. There are, however, many other pumpkin-flavored foods to choose from. In addition to being tasty, pumpkins are quite nutritious. You can expand your culinary horizons by trying some of these delicious and healthy foods flavored with pumpkin.
Pumpkin-flavored Pancakes or Waffles
Pumpkins are a great addition to any sweet dishes and this includes pancakes and waffles. You may be able to find pumpkin-flavor pancake mixes in stores. Another option is to make your own. If you make your pancakes from scratch, simply add fresh pumpkin for additional flavor. You can also some to any unflavored pancake or waffle mix that you may use.
Pumpkin Spice Oatmeal
Oatmeal is a healthy food to consume any time of day. It’s a high-glycemic food rich in fiber that supports energy and weight loss. Adding pumpkin flavor to your oatmeal makes this nutritious but rather plain cereal more tasty and interesting. You can simply add some pumpkin spice syrup to your oatmeal. Certain stores also sell pumpkin-flavored oatmeal.
Pumpkin spice lattes are very popular in the fall. If you want a healthier, lower calorie alternative, you should try making your own pumpkin spice tea instead. If you look on the shelves of any well-stocked supermarket or natural foods store, you’ll find items such as pumpkin chai tea. One trick to make this beverage even tastier is to add pumpkin spice syrup from a brand like Monin as a sweetener.
Yogurt is a healthy food that can be eaten plain or with flavors and sweeteners. You may have trouble finding a commercial brand of yogurt that’s pumpkin-flavored, though, but it’s not impossible. However, there’s nothing to stop you from adding your own pumpkin flavoring to plain yogurt. This will provide you with an interesting combination of healthy foods that’s suitable for breakfast, lunch or snacks.
Pumpkin butter is something you can use as a replacement for peanut butter, jam or butter itself. It’s another pumpkin-flavored product you can either buy in a jar or make yourself. Most recipes for pumpkin butter require mixing pumpkin puree with apple cider and flavorings such as nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla extract. The pumpkin butter can be sweetened with maple syrup or brown sugar.
These are just a few of the ways that you can add the wholesomeness of pumpkins to many everyday foods and beverages. Adding pumpkin is a way to make many dishes healthier and tastier. While these foods are great to consume in the fall, they’re actually just as delicious the rest of the year.
