It can be pretty challenging to get into the habit of consistently eating healthy meals on a regular basis. However, as you get older, you’ll realize that unhealthy eating isn’t an option anymore. If you want to live a long, healthy life, you’ve got to begin consuming the right foods. The key is in the transition. Consider the following ways you can incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your normal diet.

Consume Green Smoothies

When you mix green, leafy vegetables into a smoothie, you’ll barely be able to tell that the vegetables are there. You can try a green smoothie for breakfast to start the day and drink on the go. Add water to a blender, throw in a banana, add a few berries for a healthy dose of antioxidants, and add one or two handfuls of spinach to the mix. Once you consume a large cup, it’s as if you started your morning with a healthy salad.

Make an Interesting Side Salad

If you love eating a Cuban sandwich for lunch, that’s fine. However, instead of ordering a side of fries, get a side salad instead. Don’t douse the salad in Caesar dressing either. Try a lighter option like a vinaigrette. If you’d rather enjoy fruit, try a delightful fruit salad with a blend of berries and tropical options like mangoes, pineapples and papayas. If you really want to mix it up, consider deconstructing your regular meal into salad form. Cuban sandwich? Make it a Cuban salad instead.

Replace a Meal with a Salad

A salad can be an incredibly filling option for dinner. There are plenty of easy and healthy recipes for different salads that you can find online. The key is to make sure it’s large enough. Add a healthy portion of greens and your choice of protein (tempeh, salmon, chicken). Add any other toppings like tomatoes, olives and cucumbers. Always measure your salad dressing to get the correct serving size. Enjoy the salad with a piece of garlic bread to up the ante. A salad, a side of bread, and a refreshing drink make the perfect combination to end the day.

Try Fun Snacks

Instead of reaching for some chips to snack on, store a few packets of hummus in your desk drawer at work. You can enjoy some carrots or celery with hummus. Try some apple slices with peanut butter. These simple yet healthy options will fill you up without sacrificing your health.

As you begin to add these options to your regular diet, you’ll gradually change your taste buds. As you see the benefits of healthy eating on your body, you’re less likely to binge on unhealthy junk food. If you do, you’ll probably feel sluggish and ready to get back to your healthy ways.
