Burgers and hotdogs are delicious but come with a nice helping of calories. Thankfully, with a few substitutes, you don’t have to sacrifice your weight-watcher's diet when you have a craving. The only thing you really have to worry about is the bun. A regular hamburger bun packs about 120 calories in just one punch, not to mention the possibility of toasting it with butter. The following are four healthy and weight-friendly options to consider.

1. Thin Buns

The simplest thing you can do is purchase a thin bun to cut down some of those calories. Buying bread from a bread-making company that offers plenty of whole wheat options, like Klosterman Baking Company , will be helpful. This will allow you to enjoy bread occasionally and not worry obsessive over your weight.

2. Veggie buns

Another option is ditching the bread for vegetables.Some people go thin and green by simply wrapping the burger in a piece of lettuce. The amount of lettuce is really up to you. You can also use two portobello mushrooms as a bun alternative. Just grill the mushrooms in a little olive oil to give your burger that coveted grilled taste.

3. Egg Buns

Another good bun alternative is to use eggs as your bread. Simply cook two eggs in a small skillet (to ensure they are nice and thick when the eggs are done). To make the eggs taste more bread-like, you can add some chopped cooked noodles with the egg; just do not overdo the noodles since noodles do have calories, too.

4. Rice Buns

Some people like using rice cakes as a lower calorie alternative to bread. Another option that might work for you is sticky rice. Thai rice, to be exact, is a very sticky variety of rice that would work as a bun due to its texture. You can easily form the rice into a bun when it is done. You do have the option of seasoning the rice to your liking, which could open up a new way of eating a burger with your own special touch.

As you try a variety of substitutes, make up your own alternate bun choices with your favorite health foods.
