Most of the nutrients that your body needs should come from the foods that you eat, but sticking to a strict diet is no easy task. That is one of the reasons why many people now take multiple supplements every day. Here is a quick look at four of the most popular and effective dietary supplements that you should consider taking.


Magnesium


According to a recent study funded by the USDA, 57 percent of the US population doesn’t meet the daily recommended intake of magnesium. This particular nutrient plays an important role in many bodily functions including protein synthesis and controlling blood sugar levels. In addition to taking a magnesium supplement, you can also increase your intake of bananas, black beans, and almonds.

Fatty Acids


Over the last few years, omega-3 fatty acids supplements have become extremely popular, and those acids can positively impact almost every facet of your health. Omega-3s support cardiovascular health, reduce general inflammation, and boost cognitive health. Most omega-3 fatty acids supplements are made from some type of fish oil, but there are vegan omega-3 supplements as well. Those products are usually made from chia seeds, walnuts, or hemp seeds.

Iron


If you don’t get enough iron, then you might develop a condition known as anemia. This medical issue can result in a wide array of unpleasant side effects including fatigue, shortness of breath, confusion, insomnia, and difficulty concentrating. Patients who notice those side effects should consider taking a high-quality iron supplement. They might also want to increase their intake of spinach, broccoli, lentils, and red meat. When anemia isn’t treated, it can lead to life-altering health problems including cardiovascular disease.

Vitamin D


Vitamin D is one of the few vitamins that your body naturally produces, but you need to be out in the sun for at least 15 minutes in order to make this nutrient. You can also get vitamin D from a variety of food products including fatty fish, organ meat, cheese, and eggs. An ongoing vitamin D deficiency can result in a myriad of unusual side effects such as depression, hair loss, and joint pain. Luckily, vitamin D supplements are inexpensive, easy to find, and have almost no flavor.

Getting a blood test is the only way to accurately diagnose a deficiency, and your doctor can help you come up with a solid treatment plan if there are certain nutrients that your body is lacking.
