GIVING THANKS AND GETTING HEALTHIER

PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION |

The start of the holiday season is a good time to be thankful for the things that really matter in life. It's also a great time to start treating yourself better.

The popular book "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" helps remind us of how too often we feel frustrated by the little, unimportant aspects of our lives and our smaller day to day struggles.

Instead of worrying about the future or fretting about the past, let's celebrate the present. Being more present and aware can help you focus on what's most important to you... such as living a healthier lifestyle.

Here are some tips to guide you:

1. Treat your body better. No one expects you to eat perfectly but you should respect your body enough to fuel it properly. Take time each morning to eat breakfast, carry a water bottle with you to stay hydrated, eat throughout the day so you don't go hungry, and commit to moving your body more than you typically do. The better you treat your body, the better you will feel. Commit to activities that help strengthen the mind/body connection. Good choices include yoga, stretching, relaxation exercises and massages.

2. Practice forgiveness. Take time this holiday season to forgive someone instead of staying angry or holding a grudge. Holding a grudge keeps your life filled with negative energy which can bring down your mood and keep you feeling isolated from those who used to hold a special place in your life. Whether it's via a letter, email or phone call, you have many avenues for reaching out. Choose one and get started today!

3. Experience nature. Even though the weather is turning colder, there's something so refreshing about taking a brisk outdoor walk. The bare trees, falling snow and gray sky are reminders that you are a small part of a big world. Dress for the outdoors, find a buddy and make time to enjoy the fresh air and appreciate the beauty of nature. As an added benefit, brisk walking has been shown to boost your mood and energy level - it can even help fight food cravings!

4. Be part of a community. Whether it's a church group, school association, environmental cause or online weight loss community, being part of a group can help you connect with others and be a part of something bigger than yourself. You can find strength and harmony when you work as part of a group. In contrast, isolating yourself or not reaching out to others has been shown to be detrimental to both your physical and mental health. Take time today to get involved and participate in a cause or community of your choice.

I hope these four tips will help you reflect on ways to start treating yourself better and give thanks for all the important things in life.
