5 Tips To Finding The Right Gym

Welcome to Diet and Fitness Podcast, a free audio podcast sponsored by Diet.com. This is your fit, fun and fabulous host, Lady Diet, ready to give you the skinny on the latest diet fitness health tips and news.

Today’s podcast is inspired by my recent transition to a new gym after being at my previous fitness center for several years. You may have found yourself in a similar situation: whether you’re moving to a new city, across town, or you’re looking for a better deal, there are many reasons why people find themselves looking for a new gym. You shouldn’t just choose the first one you come across! Here are five important factors to consider that can help you find the best gym for your individual needs:

1) First, figure out what you need and what you’ll use with your gym membership. Do you simply use cardio equipment and weight machines? Or do you want a complete fitness center with swimming pools, rock climbing walls, and a bunch of classes to choose from? Save a lot of money by being realistic about what you’re really going to use. Paying more for some swanky gym might not be worth it if you only need the basics!

2) Remember that gym membership prices are often negotiable and there are always deals! Don’t settle for the first price quote they give you. There are always special promotions going on, whether it’s waiving the initiation fee or lowering your monthly payments. Sometimes this means you have to sign on to a year contract. If this is the case, be sure to ask what the fee is, should you choose to cancel. Ask the gym if they’ll match prices at other gyms! Remember that it’s worth a shot to ask – the worst they can say is no!

3) Be sure to take a tour of the gym or get a trial membership before joining. Test the waters before diving in to any long-term commitment! Take a walk around and see if the facilities are decent, clean, and well-kept. Are there spray bottles and towels around? Is it overcrowded? Take your tour of the gym during the hours you know you’ll be working out to get a feeling for what your experience will really be like.

4) If you’re looking for personal training sessions when you sign up, make sure that the trainers at your gym are certified by a nationally recognized organization of professional trainers, like the American Council on Exercise for example. Disturbingly anyone can put the words “Personal Trainer” on their business card – make sure you’re paying for someone with professional training, not an amateur.

5) Whatever you end up doing, most importantly, ask around for recommendations. It helps tremendously to hear from someone who actually goes to the gym you’re thinking of joining – they know the inside scoop, how things work, and what they’re not satisfied with (if anything).

It pays to shop around – finding a gym that you love will help your motivation tremendously and keep you coming back for more workouts! Remember that wherever you go, it’s going to take some time to adjust and become familiar with your new surroundings. Good luck, and happy gym-hunting!
