It’s finally warming up outside! Time to ditch the winter boots and put
those big heavy coats back in your closet. Like many of you, I’m always
looking for new ways to spice up my work out. After hunkering down in an
office all week, I can’t wait to get outdoors and breathe some fresh air
come the weekend. What better way to spend time outside and have fun with
friends than to play some sports. Instead of talking about some of the
usuals… softball, basketball, or tennis, I thought I’d tell you about some
of the lesser known activities out there that are really starting to take
off! Here are four ways to get your heart pumping outdoors!
When I mention golf, do you immediately think of old men, country clubs,
pale yellow sweaters, and business deals? I do, too. When I think of Disc
Golf, on the other hand, I get pretty excited! If you haven’t heard of
Disc Golf, it’s basically like golf, only with Frisbees! Players aim
their Frisbees for big metal baskets set at different distances rather
than holes in the ground, like in regular golf. Wonder where you can start
playing? The Professional Disc Golf Association has a database of over
2,000 permanent courses around the world!
While we’re on the subject of flying discs, if you really want to break a
sweat, try what’s commonly known as Ultimate Frisbee! In Ultimate, two
teams battle to get their disc to the goal on a field, much like a Rugby
or Football field. While you have to stand still to pass the disc to a
teammate, the rest of the time you’re sweating it up and getting your
cardio workout by running around the field!
If you prefer pools and lakes rather than fields and forests, get some
friends together for Water Polo! The object is pretty simple: score as
many points as possible! Water Polo works your muscles like no other.
Because you’re in the water swimming nonstop, you’re working with extra
resistance so you get a more intense workout! Meanwhile, you’re treading
water, throwing the ball around, and dodging other players! Check around
your neighborhood for different clubs offering this popular sport.
Kickball isn’t just a sport you used to play during recess on the
playground. Adult Kickball leagues are popping up all over the place. It’s
a great way to get your body moving and socialize with others outside! A
combination of soccer and softball, kickball is an easy sport to learn and
enjoy. There’s even a World Adult Kickball Association, so it’s easy to
find out if it’s being played near you!
If you haven’t tried any of these sports yet, I really hope you give one
of them… or all of them a try! They’re all great ways to get a workout and
have fun while not feeling like you’re just working out. I personally am
really excited to get into a competitive game of Ultimate!
