Welcome to diet and fitness podcast, a free audio podcast sponsored by Diet.com. This is your fit fun and fabulous host, lady diet ready to give you the skinny on the latest diet, fitness health tips and news.

You’ve been working really hard so far this year to stick to your goals and get in shape, but with Spring just around the corner, you may also be gearing up for a well-deserved vacation! If your travel buddies have been talking nonstop about the many restaurants they’ll be indulging in or the sloth-like relaxation they intend to do, you might be feeling a little antsy about how you’re going to work in your healthy lifestyle with these plans! Well fear not! Here are four easy tips you can use to enjoy your trip while not having to worry about returning five pounds heavier than when you left!

Tip 1: One of the easiest steps you can take when you’re planning your vacation is to call ahead to see if your hotel has its own gym. Many hotels do! If it doesn’t, ask someone at the hotel if there is one near by that offers day passes. If that isn’t an option, try to at least book your hotel downtown in a key location so that you and your friends can walk to the different sites you want to see. Adding in a little walking wherever and whenever you can is an easy way to burn calories, cheaper than renting a car, and a perfect way to explore the place you’re visiting!

Tip 2: Dining out at different local restaurants is one of the best parts of vacation, but you don’t need to let it destroy your diet. Motivate yourself to choose healthier alternatives. Order something grilled instead of fried. Opt for leaner meats like chicken or fish rather than meats higher in fat. Or try having a delicious salad with dressing on the side. Also, choose a refreshing glass of water with a slice of lemon rather than a soda high in sugar and calories.

Tip 3: If you absolutely can’t pull away from ordering that big, savory plate of creamy pasta or that basket of fries and chicken wings, try splitting it with a friend or going for a half-order, if it’s available on the menu. Keep in mind that most restaurants serve larger-than-life portions anyway! Why not try taking a doggie bag home with you for later!

Tip 4: Giving yourself 20 extra minutes in the morning for a few easy exercises is a simple way to keep in shape while traveling with friends. In your hotel room, do some lunges, crunches, pushups, or other exercises that don’t require a machine. If you’re at the beach, get up a little earlier in the morning and take a brisk walk along the water to get your heart pumping. A quick workout in the morning will leave you feeling energized for the rest of the day’s activities!

With all these tips in mind, the most important thing to remember is to have fun! You’re going on vacation and you deserve to treat yourself! Just don’t forget the tried and true saying, ‘all in moderation.’ You’ll feel healthier and happier and you won’t have to fear the scale when you return home!
