Thanksgiving is the holiday of great food and great company. However, if you are on a diet, you know how hard it can be to resist all the fattening and high calorie dishes. The thought of thanksgiving dinner is overwhelming and it may be hard to figure out where to start and when to finish.
Here are five easy to follow tips that will make Thanksgiving dinner easier to swallow:
1) Before dinner when you are running around frantically trying to set the table, check on the turkey and make sure the kids don’t knock everything over, take a moment and relax. Look around you and appreciate everyone who is celebrating with you. When we feel stressed or rushed we tend to eat faster and do not take time to digest properly.
2) If you are hosting dinner, try handing out portion plates so everyone can be aware of how much they are consuming. I talk about portion plates a lot because they really do work! These plates are divided into three sections; one large and two smaller sections. Fill up the large section with your vegetables and the two smaller sections with your meat and starch.
3) Now that you are ready to dig in, take a second and ask yourself how hungry you feel on a scale of 1 to 10. Than take a second to look around the table at what is being offered. A good choice to start with is plain carved turkey with no gravy, some carrots, peas and apple sauce. If you are still hungry after you finish than you can move on to something a little less healthy like one scoop of stuffing and a some more turkey and apple sauce. The idea is to eat the healthiest stuff first while you are most hungry than add the less healthy food in as your stomach starts filling up so you are less likely to eat as much of it. Again, if you use portion plates this concept is a lot easier to follow.
4) Drink plenty of water before, during and after dinner to keep you full so you are less likely to snack on all the little appetizers floating around. Also, try picking up your glass of water after every two bites of food at dinner.
5) Lastly, we cannot forget about dessert. My favorite dessert to start with is a big bowl of fat free jell-o or pudding with a tablespoon of fat free cool whip. If your sweet tooth is still calling out for that piece of apple pie than take treat yourself to a golf ball sized piece. If you are still hungry than go back for more jell-o.
See, these easy tips are practical and they don’t take much thinking or time. Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone and be sure to stay healthy and safe!
