When you’re working so hard to make healthier choices and stick to your diet, are you sure that what you’re eating really is healthy? There are many health food fakers out there that can sneak by your diet radar if you’re not careful! Well fellow dieters, let’s bring an end to diet food misconceptions! In today’s podcast, I reveal 5 diet myths and offer tips on how to make your diet strategies really work.
1) We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Boosting your metabolism with a bowl of cereal in the morning is a great low-calorie, low-fat way to stay on top of your diet. But take a closer look at the nutrition facts. Don’t let sugary breakfast cereals sneak by your diet! Opt for whole-grain, high-fiber cereals to start your day right. My favorite cold cereal is Nature’s Path Optimum Power Cereal with antioxidant-rich blueberries and flax seed.
2) Ordering soups or salads is a great strategy for keeping your calories under control at dinners. But if you’re ordering creamy soups and drenching your pre-dinner salads in rich dressings, you may adding on a lot of extra grams of fat. Look for broth-based soups and lite dressings on the side to make the most of this great diet strategy.
3) You may think that going vegetarian is a sure-fire way to champion your diet and lose weight. Many who go meatless often miss out on a lot of essential nutrients and end up eating mostly refined carbs and high-fat foods, like cheese. Make sure to get a healthy balance of whole grains, vegetables and fruit for fiber, and a source of protein to keep yourself satisfied.
4) A common myth people fall for is that tortilla chips are healthier than potato chips. Check the labels on your favorite chips and do a comparison. You’ll find that many tortilla chips often have the same amount of calories and fat as regular potato chips! For the healthiest option, look for baked, low-fat versions with zero grams of trans fat. Be adventurous and try veggie chips or pita chips! Most importantly, don’t eat chips right out of a big bag. Go for a handful in a bowl or individual sized bags for portion control.
5) You might think dried fruit is a good snack to munch on during those work hours, but often dried fruits are loaded with so much sugar! Trade these diet-busters for the real deal – normal fruits that still have their vitamins and natural sugars intact without added ingredients.
All in all, these five common diet myths can be avoided if you pay close attention to food labels and learn how to understand nutrition facts. Healthy dieting takes a lot of practice, but by keeping up to date with the latest information and trying out new foods, you’ll be well on your way toward a healthier, stronger you!
