Personality Type Diet

History of the Personality Type Diet

The Personality Type Diet is not just one diet, but rather a diet concept. It was created by Dr. Robert F. Kushner, MD, a teacher of medicine at Northwestern University and director of the Wellness Institute at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. After noticing many people who wanted and needed to lose weight but were unable to do so, Kushner came to the conclusion that no single diet works for everyone, and that dieters must be individually evaluated in order to find out what diet strategies work with their personalities. Thus, he created the Personality Type Diet, focusing on finding out what eating, exercise, and coping habits a dieter has in order to create strategies on how to change these habits to lead to weight loss and maintenance.

Finding Your Personality Type Diet

Dr. Kushner's Personality Type Diet begins with a 66-question quiz, asking dieters about their habits and attitudes toward eating, exercise, and coping. After answering these questions, a dieter is defined as a certain personality in terms of eating, exercise, and coping. For example, a person can be a "Swing Eater" when it comes to eating, a "Fresh Starter" in exercise, and a "People Pleaser" in terms of coping. With these labels, a dieter now has a better understanding of his/her habits that affect weight, and can look further into how change behaviors and attitudes based on his/her personality, and follow his/her Personality Type Diet.

Kushner offers specific advice for each personality in his book Dr. Kushner's Personality Type Diet, or through Diet.com, where you can not only find your diet personality and plans of action to change your habits, but you can also talk to Dr. Kushner for specific questions. Although the Personality Type Diet through the internet is not a free weight loss program, because the strategy features on the website come with a membership fee, for those who are in need of personal help and motivation in order to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, the price is worth it.

How the Personality Type Diet Works

The Personality Type Diet is not a fast weight loss diet. It is a complete change in lifestyle, based on creating healthy eating, exercise, and coping habits to incorporate into your daily life in order to achieve and maintain healthy weight loss. Although dieters are placed into specific categories after taking the quiz, they can still identify with elements of other categories, and look to advice in those areas as well. The Personality Type Diet is not restrictive, and allows for flexibility. The initial categories act as a starting point for dieters to get a sense of their attitudes and behaviors that affect their weight. Once dieters understand themselves, then they can take the next step in rectifying their habits through their Personality Type Diet.
