2012 New Year's Resolutions

As we say goodbye to 2011, it's time to look ahead and determine the best ways we can help ourselves to start off the New Year on the right foot.

No matter how you resolve to be healthier in 2012, there are some simple tips you can follow to help you be successful both through the months ahead and all the way into 2013.

These are tried and true healthy weight loss strategies that really do work. Here are some tips to guide you:

1) Remember the tripod approach. Losing weight is not just about the carb and protein contents of the food on your plate. Yes - diet is probably one of the most important components when it comes to losing weight but you also have to pay attention to how your mood and movement play a role too. If you're looking to be successful losing weight and keeping it off long term, food, mood and movement need to be a part of your healthy weight loss plan. By making a resolution that pertains to each of the 3 categories, you will end up following through on a more comprehensive plan.

2) Appreciate life challenges. You need to keep in mind how your life challenges are affecting your program day-to-day and week-to-week. For example, if you're in the midst of experiencing an illness, divorce, change in job or injury, then you will need to give yourself a break and re-think your goals and focus. When in the midst of one of these life stressors, you may want to set a new goal to hold your weight steady until life calms down. This approach will also help you be more realistic in your goal setting.

3) Celebrate small successes. Rather than merely focus on your longterm goal of losing 40 pounds, for example, it is recommended to celebrate your small successes along the way. To accomplish this, you will need to be paying attention to your mini-goals and whether or not you've been able to reach them. For example, are you eating more fruits and vegetables than you used to? Are you drinking more water during the day? Are you stepping on that scale each and every morning as a way to self monitor? "Yes" responses should be acknowledged and rewarded as a way to encourage these good health habits.

4) Be a joiner. If you think that going it alone is what you need to do to be successful, think again. This is the time to join in with others who understand what you’re going through. That way, you can support one another and have someone to turn to when the going gets tough. Challenge yourself to take a new class, join the online Weight Loss Challenges here on Diet.com or participate in a walking group at work. Join in on different online discussions, whether you want to post in the support boards or begin your own blog. These interactions will give you a way to share your progress, problem solve and allow others to help you succeed also.

I hope these four tips will help you be successful carrying out your resolutions at the start and throughout 2012.
