After walking for a year and replacing a few walking shoes, my girlfriend decided to join me. I had to switch my walking schedule so both of us can walk in the same time.
We started walking after dinner which felt a lot better because the sun was gone. Since my girlfriend didn't walk very much before, we started slow.
In a few months, we kept walking slow, but for longer time (around 2 hours a day - 5 miles). Having the extra time is nice, but everyone is busy and can't afford two hours a day.
At this point, my girlfriend was ready to speed up and walk a bit faster. The first day we walked fast, she got tired half way and we had to slow down. A few weeks of fast and slow walking and she started to get used to walking fast.
After about 4-5 months she was able to walk a whole hour fast. We would walk about 3.7 miles in an hour.
When you walk, if it feels too hard, you might be moving too fast. Try to slow down a bit.
