Over the summer I stop at local roadside fruit and veggie stands on my way hoe from work to pick up the fresh things that I need. I also have a small butcher shop on the way home that I stop at too. So I only go to the grocery store like once in a month or 6 weeks.
Over the fall and winter I usually do grocery shopping once a week or at least once in 2 weeks.
I am fortunate to live in a place that has wonderful fresh veggies almost year round (in winter we have greenhouses that produce fresh tomatoes, greens and mushrooms. There is also an orchard that has apples, squash and cabbage available all year round.
As I have changed my eating habits I also now make my own beans and lentils in the crockpot so I can stock up on these things ahead of time so I do have the same need to grocery shop weekly. I have a well stocked pantry and freezer.
Sunday's are my planning days and I get things going ahead of time so my week goes more smoothly. Today I have black beans, brown rice and green lentils cooking for the week ahead. I also have some butternut squash that I will make into a soup I think or maybe roast it with carrots and sweet potatoes - hmmmmm, what to do?
I buy very little processed foods - multi-grain/sprouted grain breads, organic crackers, low fat/sodium spaghetti sauce. Mostly I buy unprocessed whole foods - plain yogurt, veggies, fruit, lean meat........
So how do you grocery shop?
