If you eat the same way you did 10 years ago, odds are you will gain weight. That’s because as we age our muscle mass and metabolism decreases so our bodies need less calories.

Along the same lines, as you lose weight, your body needs less calories (approximately 8 calories less per pound lost) because there’s less of you. If you’ve already lost 20 pounds, your body may need 160 calories less than before you lost the weight.

Adapting and changing the way we eat as we age and as we lose weight is an important concept that helps us adapt to our changing bodies.

Losing those last 5 pounds or breaking through a weight plateau requires making small changes in your routine that add up over time. In an effort to start doing things differently and break through that plateau, here are some things you can try:

@ 11:47pm ET on September 22, 2009 I like this blog. You've basically said the first thing I thought when I read the title. Losing even just a little weight, has a lot to do with self control. Those last 5 pounds will come off so much easier if someone eats right consistently!
