I just read a very interesting study that spelled out exactly why you add so much more body fat when sitting down for most of the day. The study found that the enzyme called “lipase” was responsible.
The problem is that this fat absorbing enzyme “turns off” when you’re seated, so instead of absorbing the circulating fat that is moving around in your blood into your muscles, it is stored as body fat.
Unfortunately, it gets worse…
Circulating fat that isn’t stored can get clogged in your arteries! It was also shown that by sitting down for most of the day your body isn’t utilizing glucose (sugar) properly and as a result you are more prone to adding body fat and potentially getting diabetes or heart disease.
There is good news though!
By taking frequent breaks from your desk you can turn back on your fat absorbing lipase enzymes and better use sugar for energy instead of fat storage.
Here are 5 quick ways to get up more often and burn more fat:
1. Stand up and pace while talking on the phone (burns 60 calories more per hour!)
2. Take a 30 minute walk at lunch to de-stress and burn some fat
3. Take frequent walks away from your desk
4. Stand up at sporting events, your kid’s games, etc
5. Where a pedometer and shoot for 10,000 steps per day!
Like any healthy lifestyle change you make there is going to have to be an adjustment period, but if you just commit yourself to picking any one of the 5 ways above you will be well on your way to burning more fat and increasing your overall health!
