When many of us think of dieting, we think of very restrictive and unpleasant diet plans. But losing weight does not have to be unpleasant. Healthy eating for weight loss can be an easy way to lose weight successfully without having to deal with difficult weight loss programs. In fact healthy eating for weight loss will often provide greater long-term success. Healthy eating for weight loss provides us with an opportunity to improve our dietary habits while losing weight at the same time. Healthy eating for weight loss increases our awareness of good nutrition and better eating habits, which in turn makes us less apt to fall back into the trap of making poor eating choices and re-gaining the weight we lost.

However, healthy eating for weight loss can be a difficult habit for many of us to develop. Fortunately, new research suggests that replacing a normal lunch with a smaller meal replacement lunch can be an important part of healthy eating for weight loss.

In a new healthy eating for weight loss research study, investigators assessed the effect of consuming a meal replacement in place of a self-chosen lunch in 17 volunteers[1]. The study volunteers were asked to consume all their meals and snacks at the research center from Monday to Friday for 5 straight weeks. During the first week of the study, all the volunteers self-selected their meals and snacks from a buffet. During the last 4 weeks, one-half of the volunteers selected their lunch from one of six portion-controlled options (about 250 Calories) and ate whatever they wanted for their other snacks and meals. It does, though I still find it interesting that you can cut out those 250 calories without eating more later.
