Mind Over Platter

Having the happiness advantage in life requires a multi-prong approach. I hope you are following my blog and applying what you are learning about how happiness will fuel your weight loss. The advice that I am sharing with you will increase the quality of your life in all areas - mind, body and spirit!

One master key to happiness that absolutely will fuel your weight loss is exercise. Study after study will show two benefits to exercising on a regular basis. The obvious one is weight loss and the other is stress reduction.

What I found very interesting in Shawn Achor's book, The Happiness Advantage, was a blind study that involved people who were depressed and on antidepressants. One group took their meds without exercising, while the other did daily exercise. This study proved that people who work out on a daily basis had the same benefit as those who took an antidepressant.

The impact on their bodies was very much like an antidepressant! What is even more exciting is that the longer they followed the two groups, the ones who exercised ranked highest in happiness... and without drugs!

I know it's cliché for a weight loss coach to tell you to exercise. I know you hear it said time and time again. My hope for you is a lifetime habit, not a phase. There are many side benefits to exercise: your serotonin levels are increased, it tones your body, builds muscle, suppresses your appetite, boosts your metabolism and your self-esteem! You know walking counts as exercise and it's free!

To begin a life long habit, you need to do something consistently for 21 days. What is ideal is to find a way to incorporate exercise into your life as part of your routine. Examples are walking during lunch, stopping to the gym on the way home, riding your bike instead of driving. This will make it easy to continue when you need that little push. So what are you waiting for? Get up and move that body!!!
