I have elevated cholesterol levels and would like to up my protein by including different types of beans in my diet. I figured they'd be great to include on salads or in wraps instead of meat. Or as an alternative side dish to rice or potatoes.

My question has to do with the problem of gas. I love beans, but don't eat them often because sometimes they give me gas. I've tried beano and it doesn't seem to help. My question is this, if I routinely eat some sort of bean 4 or 5 times a week, will my body eventually get used to them and will the gas stop?

Great idea! Beans are incredibly nutritious, high in protein, fiber and antioxidants, and with such a wide variety of beans available, you can use them many different ways!

Incorporate them into your diet gradually and in small amounts at a time to help alleviate gas. You might find that cooking them longer (if cooking from dry) or cooking them (if out of a can) for a bit before you add them to your foods might help reduce some of the gas. Also, when using canned beans, make sure to rinse them off in water to remove most of the sodium.

You can also try mashing beans, or buy bean spreads like hummus or black bean spread. Because the beans are already broken down, you might not find gas is as bad and it'll help you get used to whole beans.

When increasing your fiber intake, make sure to increase your water intake as well!

But yes, rest assured the gas will subside once you incorporate this healthy addition regularly into your diet. Great job!
